Kyle Battle Named VaSID Baseball Player of the Year, Six Monarchs Named to First Team

NORFOLK, Va. – Kyle Battle was named the VaSID All-State Baseball Player of the Year, while six Monarchs joined him on the all-state first team. Carter Trice, Tommy Bell, Andy Garriola, Hunter Gregory and Jason Hartline earned first-team honors along with Battle. Ryne Moore was named to the second team.
 
A first-team All-Conference USA performer, Battle led Conference USA and was tied for 16th in the nation with 18 homers, and also led the league and was tied for third in the country with 56 walks. Battle earned All-America honors from four media outlets this post-season.
 
The Conference USA Freshman of the Year, Trice led ODU with a .355 batting average, and also led the club in hits with 83 and doubles with 17. Trice was a consensus freshman All-American and also earned All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball.
 
Bell finished second on the team with a .343 batting average, starting all 60 games at shortstop. He slugged eight homers, driving in 49 runs with nine doubles and five triples. He earned All-Conference USA and all-region accolades. Bell tied the single-season school record with 18 hit by pitches this season.
 
Garriola tied for the nation's lead with 72 RBIs, while hitting .318 with 14 homers and 16 doubles. He earned first-team all-region honors and All-Conference USA accolades.
 
Gregory finished third in Conference USA with a 2.95 ERA and went 8-2 in 16 appearances. He struck out 88 and walked just 19 in 79.1 innings. He earned first-team All-Conference USA honors and was selected in the eighth round of the MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays.
 
Hartline led the Monarchs with a 1.88 ERA and was 5-0 in a team-high 27 appearances out of the bullpen. He had 60 strikeouts with 10 walks in 48 innings. He finished second on the team with three saves. He earned second-team All-Conference USA honors.
 
Moore went 9-1 with a 3.16 ERA on the year and tied for second in Conference USA with nine wins. He pitched 85.1 innings with 80 strikeouts and 22 walks and held opponents to a .236 batting average. He earned All-Conference USA honors and was selected in the 18th round of the MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.
 
ODU went 44-16 in 2021, winning its first Conference USA Championship. ODU ranked No. 16 in the final top-25 polls, its highest ranking in the final polls.
