NORFOLK, Va. – Leah Onosato and Jana Melichova of the Old Dominion women's golf team were selected to the VaSID All-State Teams, the organization announced on Thursday. Onosato was voted First Team All-State, while Melichova was recognized on the second team.
A junior from Kumamoto, Japan, Onosato received an at-large bid to the NCAA Columbus Regional and was the highest-seeded individual competitor in the field. A member of the All-Conference USA Second Team and the C-USA Championship All-Tournament Team, Onosato paced the Monarchs with a 74.0 stroke average and finished the season ranked 153rd by Golfstat. She notched three top-10 results on the season, including a runner-up finish at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational. Onosato tied for fourth at the conference championship at 2-under 214, which was highlighted by a 3-under 69 in the opening round to match her personal best. She is being honored by VaSID for the first time in her career.
A former VaSID Rookie of the Year, Melichova was second on the team in scoring average at 74.2 and was ranked 240th by Golfstat. A third team all-conference honoree, the junior from Pikovice, Czechia was the runner-up at the C-USA Championship with a 54-hole total of 8-under 208 – season lows for gross score and score in relation to par. She finished each of the three rounds at the conference championship under par, highlighted by a season-best 68 (-4) in the second round. Melichova added another top-10 finish at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational and was tied for eighth at the Match at Spring Creek, an 18-hole tri-match featuring Virginia and Richmond. Melichova is appearing on a VaSID All-State team for the second time in her career. She was an all-state first teamer as a freshman in 2019.
Virginia and Virginia Tech split major honors with the Cavaliers' Beth Lillie and Jennifer Cleary being named golfer and rookie of the year, respectively. The Hokies' Carol Robertson was honored as VaSID Coach of the Year.
