Baseball Explodes for Seven Home Runs to Sweep Marshall, 15-7

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Old Dominion baseball team tallied a single-game program record seven home runs on Sunday afternoon as they took down Marshall, 15-7 on the road. Carter Trice led ODU with two homers, also notching seven RBIs on the day.
 
"The boys showed a lot of toughness today and broke open a close game with seven runs in the last two innings," ODU head coach Chris Finwood said. "Jason Hartline was fantastic out of the pen and really helped us switch the momentum around in our favor."
 
ODU (21-5, 7-1) wasted no time getting on the board as Trice opened the contest with a three-run home run. Trice struck again in the second, scoring Thomas Wheeler and Tommy Bell to put ODU up, 5-0.
 
In the third inning, Matt Coutney led off with a home run to give ODU a 6-0 lead.
 
Starter Ryne Moore tossed three scoreless frames until the Herd (4-15, 0-8 C-USA) exploded for five runs in the fourth, making it one-run game.  
 
Jason Hartline entered to pitch 3.0 innings, fanning five batters to pick up his third win of the season.  
 
In the sixth, Wheeler led off with a single and reached second with a Marshall throwing error. Kyle Battle knocked in Wheeler off a sacrifice fly. Kenny Levari homered to add another run to give ODU an 8-5 lead over the Herd.
 
The Herd added one run in the seventh to close the deficit to two.
 
ODU answered in the eighth when Battle and Trice went yard. The Herd put one right back on the board off a Jordan Billups homer.
 
The Monarchs extended its lead in the ninth inning. Wheeler led off with a single, Battle walked and Levari reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Trice then scored Wheeler off a single. Ryan Teschko knocked one out of the park to plate three runs. Lincoln Ransom added the seventh home run of the day to break ODU's record.
 
Joey DeChiaro pitched two innings, striking out two and allowed one Marshall run.
 
"It's really hard to sweep four games, especially on the road," Finwood said. "I'm proud of how hard we played all weekend!"
 
For the series, ODU outscored Marshall 43-15. The team recorded a whopping 14 home runs in the series, highlighted by seven on Sunday. ODU is currently tied with Charlotte at the top of the C-USA East standings. They also remain undefeated (8-0) on the road.
