CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 20 Old Dominion baseball team suffered a doubleheader loss to No. 19 Charlotte on Sunday afternoon to drop its first C-USA series of the season. The 49ers won the first contest, 8-3 and took down ODU, 7-1 in the second game at Hayes Stadium.
"We just got beat today. Charlotte got all the big hits in those two innings. We didn't get enough big hits and you have to give their pitchers Lindsey and Brooks credit for making the pitches when they needed them," ODU head coach Chris Finwood said. "They certainly outplayed and outcoached us today. We will get back to work and get ready for another big series with Charlotte at home next weekend."
In game one, ODU (28-10, 14-6 C-USA) took an early 2-1 lead after back-to-back single-run innings.
Charlotte (29-11, 17-3 C-USA) took its first lead of the contest in the fourth inning and never looked back. The 49ers went on to score seven runs over two innings of action.
ODU took one back in the seventh when Matt Coutney delivered an RBI single to score Kenny Levari, who led off with a single.
Ryne Moore notched a season-high seven strikeouts in game one of the afternoon. The junior gave up eight runs and was charged with his first loss of the season.
The 49ers opened the second game with one run in the first inning. They plated six runs in the second inning to lead 7-0 through five innings.
Ryan Teschko delivered a solo homer to left field, which notched the Monarchs 67th home run of the season. Teschko's longball set a new program record for single season homers, breaking the 1997 record of 66.
Nick Pantos dropped his first game of the season, giving up seven runs off four hits.
