HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The Old Dominion men's soccer team played No. 8 nationally ranked Marshall to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Saturday afternoon at Hoops Family Field. Djibril Doumbia faced a total of 21 shots, while making a season high nine saves in goal for ODU.

"I am very proud of our young team, as they showed great resilience and determination against one of the best teams in the country," said ODU head coach Alan Dawson. "We had to answer an early goal and play the final 23 minutes with 10 men to earn our well-deserved point."

Just 3:20 into the match, Vinicius Fernandes gave the Thundering Herd (6-2-2, 3-0-1 C-USA) an early 1-0 lead off a double assist.

The Monarchs responded back when Ruben Pedersen took advantage of an errant Marshall pass to tie the match at 1-1 in the 25th minute. The goal was the first for Pedersen at Old Dominion.

Both teams attempted four shots in the opening 45 minutes, while the Thundering Herd took all six of the corner kicks in the first half.

In the second frame, Marshall fired off 10 of the half's 11 attempted shots, but the play of ODU's Doumbia kept the Thundering Herd scoreless, as Doumbia racked up five second half saves for the Monarchs.

Old Dominion (1-1-3, 0-1-3 C-USA) played the final 23 minutes of the match a man down, but was able to force its third draw of the season.

For the match, the Thundering Herd held advantages for shots (21-5), as well as corners (13-0).

Old Dominion will return to the pitch on Sunday, April 4, when the Monarchs welcome Charlotte to the ODU Soccer Complex for a 2 p.m. start on CUSA.TV. To accommodate Monarch fans as a result of the difficult circumstances related to the pandemic, the ODU Athletics department is pleased to offer free admission to all home ODU soccer matches for the 2021 season.
