NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion volleyball team fell to Marshall in three sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-21) on Monday afternoon at the ODU Volleyball Center.
In the first set, the two sides played even, until Marshall mounted an 11-2 run to take a 21-13 lead. An Ashley Peroe kill sparked a 4-3 ODU run, but Marshall's hot start was too much to overcome. The Herd won the first set, 25-17.
ODU opened the second set strong, leading 4-1. The Herd responded with three unanswered points to even the game, 4-4. Both teams fired off points in a back-and-forth affair, but a 7-2 Herd scoring run would change momentum, 11-6. ODU countered with a 7-4 run to get back within two, but Marshall edged the Monarchs 10-7 the rest of the way to earn a 25-20 win.
The third set featured the closest game of the afternoon. The two teams traded points early on, keeping the game tied, 18-18. Marshall began to break away with a Destiny Leon kill, which mounted a 7-3 run to close out the game, 25-21.
Overall, ODU was led offensively by Peroe, who fired off 14 kills, matching her career-high. Alessia Sgherza notched her fifth double-double of the season (10 kills, 11 digs). Meanwhile, Madelyn Grunza came in for two sets and notched three kills, hitting .429.
