NORFOLK, Va. – Katie McGrain and Olivia Tanneberger both scored goals for Old Dominion women's lacrosse in the Monarchs' 19-2 loss to No. 17 Richmond at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

"Richmond is a very talented and athletic team," head coach Heather Holt said. "Our defense made some quality stops today, but we still need to transition the ball with more confidence and have much better shooting on attack. These types of games are great experiences for our young."

The Spiders (4-1) opened the game with a 6-0 scoring run. McGrain put ODU (2-5) on the board with 6:17 left in the first half with her third goal of the season – a woman-up marker assisted by Maddie Mullenbach. UR then netted five unanswered to take an 11-1 lead into the break.

Tanneberger scored her third goal of the year just over three minutes into the second half to make it a 12-2 game. The final seven goals of the day went to the Spiders.

Preseason Inside Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-American Sam Geiersbach scored five times and dished a pair of assists to share the game high with five points. Lindsey Frank recorded five assists and two goals as well. Arden Tierney had a hat trick with three assists for a six-point outing.

Lauren Carey picked up four ground balls to share the game high. The freshman from Chester Springs, Pennsylvania also caused one turnover. Madison Corcoran matched season highs with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Caroline Shaefer ended the day with four draw controls.

Starting goalkeeper Megan Gianforte made seven saves in a winning effort. Brianna Blatter stopped eight shots in 36:13 of action.

The Monarchs begin their inaugural campaign in the American Athletic Conference with a pair of home games against East Carolina on Friday, March 19 and Sunday, March 21. Both games start at 1 p.m.
