PINEHURST, N.C. – The Old Dominion men's golf team sits in a two-way tie for fourth place just four strokes off the lead following the first round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The Monarchs carded a 16-over-par 300 on the par-71, 6,937-yard Pinehurst No. 8.
"We teed off at 7:15 this morning and it was cold and the wind was blowing and the greens were difficult," head coach Murray Rudisill said. "Even though we played poorly we're still not out of the tournament and have a chance to come back again tomorrow and Sunday."
Playing a challenging course, no participant in the 71-person event went under par on Friday. Brandon Weaver of Longwood leads the field following an even-par 71.
Gustav Fransson and Rasmus Konradsson both turned in 3-over 74s and are in a nine-way tie for 13th place. After going 4-over on the back nine to start the day, Fransson rallied with a 1-under 35 on the front nine, including birdies on the first and seventh holes. Fransson's two birdies in the first round were tied for the 12th-most among the field and were the most by a Monarch.
