NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday when it welcomes local rival William & Mary to the L.R. Hill Sports Complex for a 1 p.m. tilt. The game is streaming for free on odusports.com.
ABOUT ODU
The Monarchs are getting their first taste of competitive lacrosse in nearly two weeks. ODU opened its season on Feb. 12 with an 11-7 home loss to VCU. Old Dominion held an early 3-2 lead, but three-straight goals by the Rams to close out the first half proved decisive. The Monarchs rallied to within a goal at 6-5 with 25:31 remaining in the game, but VCU scored four unanswered to keep control of the lead.
ODU received important contributions from its newcomers in the game. Corrinne Stratton led all Monarchs with two goals. Moira Olexa scored once and recorded two draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover. Emily Goline scored from a free position attempt, and Lauren Carey had game highs in draw controls (four) and caused turnovers (three).
ABOUT WILLIAM & MARY
The Tribe began the season with a 24-8 loss at No. 15/11 Duke on Feb. 17. Sarah Cipolla paced W&M with a career-high four goals in addition to four ground balls and three draw controls. Lauren Russell and Kathleen Cozzi netted a pair of goals each.
William & Mary features a pair of preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association players in Belle Martire and Starr Howard. Martire paced the conference with 4.0 goals per game during the shortened 2020 season. Howard caused 2.0 turnovers per game last season, good for 13th nationally.
THE SERIES
The former conference adversaries are set to meet for the 51st time on Wednesday. The Monarchs have played the Tribe more than any other opponent with the two playing at least once a year since 1980.
Last season, ODU dropped an 11-4 game to W&M. Four different Monarchs scored in that game, and Sabrina Leatherwood made 11 saves.

Old Dominion hosts Longwood on Saturday, Feb. 27 at noon.
