NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion field hockey team kicks off its 12-match BIG EAST slate with home dates against Temple this Saturday (Feb. 20) and Sunday (Feb. 21). Saturday's match starts at 11 a.m., and Sunday's contest is scheduled for 4 p.m.

ABOUT ODU
The Monarchs are continuing a home stretch that sees them play five straight at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex to start the season. Four of those five contests are against BIG EAST competition, giving ODU a golden opportunity to start conference play on the front foot. The Monarchs won their BIG EAST opener last season, a shootout victory at Providence. ODU went 6-1 in conference play in 2019 and is on a five-match winning streak in BIG EAST regular season tilts.

Old Dominion dropped its first match of the season on Sunday, falling 3-2 in overtime to VCU. Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree Riley Taylor scored both goals for the Monarchs. ODU had a sizeable advantage in total shots (18-5), but the Rams proved more clinical with their finishing.

ABOUT TEMPLE
The Owls began their season last Friday with a 1-0 home win over Hofstra. Temple was stout defensively and held the Pride to a single shot attempt. Veronika Novakova scored the game's only goal in the 12th minute.

Temple was picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST preseason poll after going 7-10 overall and 2-5 in the conference in 2019. Dani Batze, the Owls' leading scorer last season with six goals, was selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST team and assisted Novakova's winner against Hofstra.

THE SERIES
Old Dominion enjoys a 23-4-1 all-time mark and is on a three-match win streak against the Owls. The Monarchs topped Temple by a 2-1 score in Norfolk in 2019. Erin Huffman and Rebecca Birch both scored off penalty corners for the home side. Marlee McClendon racked up a pair of assists in the win.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Monarchs welcome yet another team from the Philadelphia area when Villanova visits for a pair of matches on Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27. Those contests are scheduled for noon and 4 p.m. starts, respectively.
