MANHEIM, PA – Old Dominion wrestlers Killian Cardinale and Sa'Derian Perry each earned a spot on the 2019-2020 Scholar All-American squad, while the team was one of 30 selected as a Scholar All-American Team, the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced on Thursday afternoon.
Cardinale, a speech pathology and audiology major, owns a 3.55 GPA and was also named an Honorable Mention All-American this season by the NWCA. He qualified for his first NCAA Championships, finishing the season with a team-high 25 wins and was ranked in the top-15 in four national polls.
The 125-pounder was also the runner-up finisher at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Wrestling Championships and earned six wins against ranked opponents this season. This honor is the second one that Cardinale has earned this season that acknowledges his excellence in the classroom, as he was also named to the2020 MAC All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year.
Perry boasts a 3.02 GPA as a psychology major. The 2018 All-American collected 18 wins at 141 pounds on the mat this season and qualified for his third straight NCAA Championships after earning a fourth-place finish at the MAC Wrestling Championships.
The Lake Gibson, Florida native finished the season ranked No. 18 according to Intermat and earned second team VaSID All-State honors.
To qualify to be a Scholar All-American, wrestlers must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and be a 2020 NCAA Qualifier or have a 3.2 cumulative GPA and won 60% of their total matches.
As a team, the Monarchs checked in with a 3.25 GPA, good for 15th in the country. The team's GPA improved from last season, when it registered a 3.19 and was ranked 25th in the nation.
