NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University baseball scored a season-high 18 runs on 21 hits to defeat Yale 18-10 Saturday at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
Heading into the sixth inning tied at three, ODU scored five runs in the sixth, seven in the seventh and three in the eighth to blow it up.
All nine ODU starters had a hit and eight of nine had at least two hits in the offensive onslaught.
Yale scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning but the Monarchs came right back in the bottom of the inning. Matt Burch and Chris Dengler led off the game with walks and Ryan Teschko followed with a home run to give ODU a 3-1 lead.
The Bulldogs tied the score at three in the fifth but ODU followed with a five run sixth to take an 8-3 lead. Michael Marrale, Austin LaFollette and Ryan Teschko each delivered run scoring singles, while Matt Burch delivered a two-run double.
Yale battled back in the top of the seventh with a two-run double from Carson Swank and a two-run homer from Teddy Hague to cut the deficit to 8-7.
Burch, Dengler and Tommy Bell knocked in RBI hits in the seventh, while Matt Coutney registered his first career home run.
Ryne Moore started for ODU and went 4.2 innings and gave up six hits and two earned runs. Joey Rodriguez earned his first career win, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing two hits, one walk and one strikeout.
ODU and Yale play the final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
