Ryan Teschko hit a missile in the seventh inning

NORFOLK, Va. - Behind a brilliant offensive effort from Ryan Teschko, the Old Dominion (7-1, 0-0 C-USA) baseball team defeated Yale, 6-1, in the series opener at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

Old Dominion scored three runs in the first inning and led for the remainder of the game.

"Offensively, we got up 3-0 and we expanded a little bit. Ryan Teschko swung the bat great for us today and so did Chris Dengler," explained head coach Chris Finwood. "Teschko has been working hard. He got off to a little bit of a slow start but him and coach Robbins made some adjustments in the cage this week and his BP has been really good so he took it into the game today. He's a good hitter, he's always hit and he kinda showed that today."

Yale, who entered the game with just one series under its belt scored its only run in the eighth inning on a single that knocked in a run.

Hunter Gregory threw five strikeouts in just over five innings of work to earn his second win of the season. Aaron Holiday came in for two innings, earning three strikeouts and allowing one run on three hits. Trey Fisher and Michael Parmentier wrapped things up for the Monarchs, not allowing any more Bulldog (1-3, 0-0 Ivy League) runs.

"I thought Hunter didn't have his best stuff but he battled through five and a third. He didn't give up any runs on four hits. Same thing with Holiday in the middle. A little erratic but he did a good job overall."

Offensively, two Monarchs in Chris Dengler and Teschko had multi-hit performances, which was highlighted by Teschko, who earned a home run and three RBIs. Freshman third baseman Dengler knocked in one RBI and grabbed three hits. Two additional Monarchs earned RBIs including Kyle Battle and catcher Jared Hancock.

ODU added runs in the second, third and seventh innings to finalize scoring for the Monarchs. As a team, seven of the Monarchs nine starters recorded a hit.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday with a 2 PM start at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
