NORFOLK, Va. – For the fifth consecutive year on Sept. 11, the Old Dominion University lacrosse team raised money to honor and show their appreciation to local first responders.

Led by senior Kortney Parker, the lacrosse team raised more than $1,900 to provide dinner to Firehouse #7, which is located just off campus on the corner of Hampton Blvd. and 43rd street. All additional money raised will go to the Norfolk Burn Center.

A car parade will go by the firehouse at 6 p.m.

A native of Waxhaw, North Carolina, Parker spearheaded the event.

"The 9/11 remembrance event became especially important to me as a freshmen. It was the first community service event we attended since being on campus and it was remarkable to see that being a college athlete isn't just about the sport. There is a lot more to it, including giving back to the community," Parker said. "This is the fifth annual 9/11 remembrance event that we have held and it is exciting to see how the event has grown over the years. This year we were able to raise more donations than ever, even with the circumstances. Besides all of the chaos in the world, we must all remember today is a day to: celebrate the men and women who sacrifice their lives, hug your loved ones, remember why you are grateful, and appreciate the little things."
