Carter Morgan lines up a putt at the 107th VSGA Amateur Championship

GREAT FALLS, Va. – After shooting a combined 4-under par in the first two qualifying rounds of the 107th Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Amateur Championship, senior Carter Morgan of the Old Dominion men's golf team was defeated by Dustin Groves on the tie-breaking 19th hole in the round of 32 on Thursday afternoon at River Bend Club.

Morgan, a native of Tappahannock, Va., and Groves each birdied three holes on the front nine and shot an even par on the back nine in today's head-to-head round, both scoring a 3-under 68 after 18 holes. Morgan couldn't match Groves' birdie on the tie-breaking 19th par-5, thus ending his run in the tournament.

The Monarch started his week with a 3-under 68 in the first qualifying round, and followed that with a 1-under 70 in the second qualifying round, placing him in a tie for seventh in the initial field of 96 golfers that took their swings on the par-71 course.

In last year's VSGA Amateur Championship, Morgan also met his demise in the round of 32, falling to eventual semifinalist Jimmy Taylor. Morgan, who won the VCU Invitational this past season while leading the Monarchs to a team victory in the tournament, will be returning to play for ODU after the men's golf 2019-2020 campaign was shortened due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Since 1904, the VSGA has been dedicated to providing golfers a full range of services for the good of the game and golf in Virginia. The VSGA has been hosting their Amateur Championship since 1911, with a three-year exception from 1942-1945 due to World War II.
