NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion lacrosse team will welcome in-state foe No. 20 Richmond to the L.R. Hill Sports Complex on Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m. in their final Commonwealth Clash of the season.
The Monarchs have lost their last two contests, including a 22-9 setback against Davidson this past Wednesday. Glory Johnson registered six points, including four goals in the effort. It was the sixth time she scored at least three goals in a game so far this season. Johnson currently is among the best in the nation offensively, ranking sixth in goals and seventh points, with 25 and 36, respectively. She is also ranked sixth in the country in draw controls per game with 8.14.
Lilly Siskind, who also scored a goal and registered an assist against the Wildcats, is currently second on the team with 11 goals. Senior Brooke Stein is second behind Johnson on the team with 15 points while putting up eight goals and seven assists on her ledger.
On the defensive side of the ball, Madison Corcoran leads the team with nine caused turnovers while collecting eight ground balls. Mary Katherine Maloney, Anna Davis and Johnson each have six caused turnovers, tied for second on the squad. Maloney also has a share of the team lead in ground balls pickups, gathering 14 on the season.
For the second consecutive game, Brianna Blatter came in off the bench to tend goal against Davidson, earning seven saves. In the last two games that she came into relief, Blatter has stopped 17 shots.
About Richmond
The Spiders are currently 6-0 to start the year and are featured in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) coaches' rankings for the first time this season, checking in at No. 20.
Richmond took down No. 6 Virginia on the road in overtime last week, 13-12. Lindsay Frank netted the game-winner with six seconds remaining in overtime to stun the Cavaliers and knock them out of the IWLCA's top-10. The Spiders followed that performance with an 18-9 victory over Liberty in their last game on Saturday, February 29.
Richmond is one of 10 teams that are currently undefeated in Division I women's lacrosse, and they are fourth in the country in points per game, with 28.5. The offense is led by Arden Tierney, who has 22 goals on the year and brings in 8.17 draw controls per game. Sam Geiersbach and Lindsey Frank are ranked first and second in the Atlantic 10 (A-10) Conference in assists, with 18 and 14, respectively.
Megan Gianforte has started all six games for the Spiders, registering 43 saves and a 7.22 goals against average, a mark that ranks her fourth in the country. She also leads the A-10 in save percentage with .506.
Series History
The Monarchs and the Spiders have faced off against each other a total of 47 previous times, with ODU earning 24 victories. The first time these two teams met was in the 1980 season and they have faced each other at least once every year since.
Recently, the Spiders have had the upper hand in the series, winning the last 10 matchups and 14 of the last 15. Last season in Richmond, the Spiders dispatched the Monarchs, 20-5, thanks in part to a 13-goal first half. Johnson registered a hat trick in the loss, while Siskind and Stein also scored a goal in the effort.
