GILBERT, Ariz. – The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced the 2019 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award recipients on Tuesday morning, and Old Dominion was among the 73 programs that earned recognition.
The ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award is given to the Division I field hockey programs that earned a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester of the 2019-2020 school year.
2019 is the 14th-straight year that the ODU field hockey program was recognized with this award, dating back to the 2006 season. In that stretch, the Monarchs had the highest team-GPA in all of Division I field hockey twice, in 2009 and 2007.
On the field, the Monarchs posted an 11-7 record, 6-1 in the BIG EAST, and reached the conference finals for the first time in 2013. ODU finished the season ranked 17th in the NFHCA coaches' poll and 13th in the RPI.
The NFHCA will announce three more Division I academic awards in the coming weeks. The Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA National Academic Squad will be announced on March 10, the Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Scholars of Distinction on March 23, and the Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA National Scholar-Athlete on March 31.
