Melichova Wins Maryb S. Kauth Invitational; Women's Golf Takes Second

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Sophomore Jana Melichova collected her first collegiate win behind a three-under 213 performance at San Antonio Country Club. Mallory Hetzel's golf Monarchs finished as the runner-up in the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational hosted by the winner, UTSA. 

"We wish we could have given UTSA a better fight," explained head coach Mallory Hetzel. "We came out here to win. San Antonio Country Club is a demanding track and I think it will help us for next week at Briar's Creek. We played a lot of good golf overall and I'm thrilled to see Jana get her first college win. It's so tough to win in this game and she's thrilled to be holding the trophy." 

Melichova led the field in par 3 scoring and par 4 scoring, while compiling 41 pars over the 54-hole event. Also placing in the top-10, sophomore Leah Onosato put together a seven-over 223, which was highlighted by her second round 71. Onosato added 39 pars on her scorecard, good for third-most in the field, right behind her teammate, Melichova.

Playing as an individual, Anika Bolcikova tied for 10th, finishing as the top individual. Pilar Muguruza fired her best round of the tournament in a five-over 77. Noemie Sudron matched Muguruza's round, finishing in a tie for 33rd. Roundinig out scoring for ODU, Madison Corley collected an 87. 

"I'm very happy for my first college win," said Melichova. "I think I can say I did everything I could during the preparation before the tournament, I was feeling good and confident. This was a great fun course and a good course to play before Briar's Creek."

The Monarchs will return to action shortly at the Briar's Creek Invitational hosted by the College of Charleston on March 16-17.
