Baseball Drops 19-7 Contest to Yale

Matt Coutney led the team with three hits on Sunday

NORFOLK, Va. - In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Old Dominion (8-2, 0-0 C-USA) baseball team clawed its way back from a 7-0 deficit to get within four runs of Yale, before falling, 19-7 to the Bulldogs (2-4, 0-0 Ivy League) in the weekend finale at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. 

The Monarchs finished the weekend 2-1 against Yale. 

The Bulldog's scored the game's first run in the top of the second off starting pitcher Nick Pantos, who went three innings, allowing seven hits with three strikeouts. The Bulldogs opened things up offensively with five more runs in the third, which featured two home runs. The Monarch offense went to work in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs after a Matt Burch single and Yale pitcher Ben Gibbs allowing three Monarchs to walk. Additionally, with the help of a Chris Dengler double to center, the Monarchs knocked in another run. ODU went in to the top of the fifth trailing the Bulldogs, 7-3. 

It was not enough as Yale scored two runs in the sixth, six in the seventh and four in the eighth to go ahead 19-4. The Monarchs knocked in three runs in the ninth but couldn't comeback from Yale's offensive explosion. 

Overall, Yale had tacked on six home runs in the Sunday affair. Pantos was served his first loss of the season and moves to 2-1 as a starter. Matt Coutney, Chris Dengler, Jared Hancock and Kyle Battle put together multi hit performances on the afternoon.
