Fransson Tied for Second, ODU Third After First Round of Martin Downs Collegiate

Gustav Fransson's 66 leads ODU after the First Round of the Martin Downs Collegiate

PALM CITY, Fla. – The Old Dominion men's golf team, led by junior Gustav Fransson's 6-under par, ended the first round of the Martin Downs Collegiate in third place with a team score of 277 (11-under par) on Friday.
 
Fransson's first-round 66 puts him in a tie for second with three other golfers, Graham Hutchinson and Bronson Myers of Elon and Blake Wisdom of Bucknell. The Umea, Sweden native birdied seven holes on the day and eagled the par-5 eighth hole. Fransson's eagle was one of three that ODU collected on the day, as Carter Morgan and Rasmus Konradssoneach eagled the par-5 third hole.
 
Three other Monarchs finished the first round under par at Martin Downs Golf Clubs' Osprey Course. Freshman Filip Wetterqvist finished his first 18 holes tied for ninth with a 4-under 68. Senior Doug Rios-Ceballos, golfing independently this weekend, came into the clubhouse in a tie for 26th with a 2-under par. 
 
Morgan was the fourth Monarch to finish his round under par, coming in with a 1-under 71. Konradsson scored an even 72, while junior Chris Ayers finished his day with a 7-over 79.  
 
Through 18 holes, ODU sits behind host UNC Greensboro and No. 49 James Madison, who came into the clubhouse with team scores of 270 and 276, respectively. UNCG's Jonathan Brightwell, the No. 8 golfer in the country, sits atop the player leaderboardwith a 10-under 62. 
 
ODU'ssecond round begins tomorrow at 8:40 a.m. The Monarchs are paired with Villanova, Purdue Fort Wayne and James Madison.
