NORFOLK, Va. - After a successful fall campaign, the Old Dominion men's golf team begins its spring season this weekend in Palm City, Florida when it competes in the Martin Downs Collegiate, hosted by UNC Greensboro.
The Monarchs are looking to replicate the success they had in the fall season where they finished in the top-six in all four tournaments, including a second-place finish at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate and a victory at the VCU Invitational, their first win since the 2016-2017 season.
Senior Carter Morgan led ODU to the VCU Invitational triumph, as he finished atop the individual leaderboard shooting a 13-under par in the tournament. Morgan's second-round 64 propelled him to victory and was tied for the lowest round score by a Monarch in the fall. Junior Rasmus Konradsson matched his 64 in the second round of the fall finale, the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.
Morgan's average round score sits at 70.9, and he is one of three ODU golfers who averaged a round score of under 71 in the four fall tournaments. Chris Ayers leads the Monarchs in that category with a mark of 70.2. Gustav Fransson is right on Ayers' trail with an average round score of 70.3. Fransson has a pair of top-three finishes this season, finishing in third place in the final two tournaments in the fall. Ayers and Konradsson each have a top-five finish, as Ayers finished tied for fourth at the Golfweek Program Challenge to start the year and Konradsson finished tied for fourth at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.
The Martin Downs Collegiate will take place on Martin Downs Golf Club's Osprey Course in Palm City, Florida. It is a par-72 course that spans 6,802 yards. James Madison is the highest-ranked team participating, according to GolfStat's team rankings, as the Dukes check in at 49 in the nation. UNCG comes into the spring season ranked 71st in the country while ODU is currently ranked 120 in the poll.
Round one starts on Friday, February 14 at 7:30 a.m. You can follow all of this weekend's action on GolfStat.
