NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion lacrosse team will be back in action on Wednesday, February 12 at 3 p.m. against VCU to conclude a brief two-game home stand to start the 2020 season.
The Monarchs suffered a 12-8 loss against Coastal Carolina in their first game of the new season this past Saturday. Glory Johnson registered five points in the contest, scoring three goals and assisting on two others. Last season, Johnson scored 53 goals for ODU, the fifth-most in a single season in program history.
Senior Michelle Hallman also had an impressive season debut against the Chanticleers, scoring two goals, both with the extra-player advantage, and collecting an assist in the season-opener. Her classmate Mary Katherine Maloney led the Monarchs with four ground ball pickups, while registering two shots, a draw control and a caused turnover.
Both Monarch goalkeepers made an appearance in Saturday's match, as Brianna Blatter got the starting nod while Sabrina Leatherwood came in for relief. Blatter played over just 21 minutes and made one save. Leatherwood replaced Blatter for the final 38 minutes and stopped three shots. Both goalkeepers allowed six goals.
About VCU
Wednesday's game at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex will be the Rams' first game of the 2020 campaign. In 2019, VCU put together a 7-10 overall record, 4-5 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Rams made their conference championships as the sixth seed, but lost in the first round to St. Joseph's to end their season.
In the A-10 preseason poll, VCU was selected to finish sixth in the 10-team conference.
Series History
ODU and VCU have faced off against each other in each of the last four seasons, with the Monarchs winning the first three contests between the two programs.
These two teams met last season in similar fashion, as it was ODU's second game of the season and it was VCU's season-opener. The Rams managed to edge the Monarchs, 13-10. In that game, ODU was facing a 9-3 deficit at the half, but scored five of the first seven goals out of the intermission break. They could not complete the comeback, and VCU earned its first win of the series.
