CLEVELAND, Ohio – Old Dominion sophomore Killian Cardinale has been named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East Division Wrestler of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Cardinale earned two wins by major decision against MAC foes this past week with a combined score of 29-10. In Friday's dual against Edinboro, the 125-pounder earned a 15-5 victory over Lucas Rodriguez, followed by a 14-5 win over Cam Butler of Clarion on Sunday afternoon. Each bout earned bonus points for ODU, kick-starting the Monarchs to 24-9 and 25-9 wins, respectively.
This is the second time the Bristow, Virginia native was named MAC East Division Wrestler of the Week, as he also received the honor on November 13 for his performance in the second week of the season. Seniors Sa'Derian Perry and Larry Early have also been named MAC Wrestlers of the Week earlier this season.
Cardinale is ranked in the top-20 in four national polls, coming in as high as 14th in TrackWrestling's rankings. He leads the Monarchs with 18 wins this season and has won five of his last six bouts. Nine of his victories have come in duals and four have come against ranked opponents.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday, February 2 at 1 p.m. when they host No. 7 Virginia Tech at Chartway Arena. The dual will be ODU's alumni match, and the team will hold a presentation honoring all former Monarch wrestlers in attendance at halftime. The ODU wrestling program will also hold a special pre-match ceremony in honor of former Monarch wrestler and assistant coach, Jamie Kelly.
