Amaya Register recorded a career-high 16 points in the Monarchs 68-44 win against Winthrop

NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore Amaya Register recorded a career-high 16 points on the way to the Monarchs (3-0) 68-44 victory against Winthrop (1-2) on Education Day.
 
"It's always great to have a game like this for the kids," said head coach Nikki McCray. "To represent the City of Norfolk and the Public Schools and so they can come out and see our young women and hopefully are inspired by how they play."
 
To open up the game, the Monarchs went 50-percent from the 3-point line. In the second quarter, the Monarchs opened up their lead with 20-second quarter points. Heading into the locker room, ODU led 35-21.
 
"I want to credit Winthrop's defense. They changed defenses with us every time down the court. They had a great game plan and keeping us in the half court as much as possible and making us read defense."
 
IIn the second half, the Monarchs led by as much as 28 point with just over one minute to go in the final quarter. The Eagles turned the ball over seven times in the second half, which led the Monarchs to 7 points off those turnovers. 
 
Overall, ODU had 40 points off the bench, where nine different Monarchs scored in the Wednesday afternoon matchup. Register went 4-for-8 from 3-point range. For the second-straight game, sophomore Ajah Wayne had over 10 rebounds. In front of 5,935 fans, Wayne picked up 13 rebounds. Senior Taylor Edwards also dished out four assists against the Eagles.  
 
For the Eagles, Marissa Cantrell led the team with nine points.
