NORFOLK, Va. - Head coach Nikki McCray of the Old Dominion women's basketball team signed three players to the 2019 recruiting class in Skylah Travis, Ash'a Thompson and Lanay Wheaton.
"My staff and I are excited to have these three talented young ladies and their families join our program," explained McCray. "These future Monarchs display good character and have a winning mentality, which fits our team and culture."
SKYLAH TRAVIS
Position: 6-3 Center
Hometown: Weldon, N.C.
High School: Weldon High School
AAU Program: BWSL Marsh
Academic Interests: Criminal Justice
Biography: Skylah Travis is an athletic post player from Weldon, N.C., a town location approximately an hour outside of Raleigh. This past season, Travis led her team to the North Carolina Girls Basketball State Tournament, where she averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocks. Off the court, Travis plans to study Criminal Justice.
McCray on Travis: "Skylah Travis has a special talent, which is different from any of our current post players. She is a tremendous athlete with good size. She can do so many things - score around the rim, rebound, defend and block shots. We are excited to have Skylah who will fit right in with our style of play and immediately impact our team."
ASH'A THOMPSON
Position: 5-10 Wing
Hometown: Desoto, Texas
High School: Desoto High School
AAU Program: Lady Drive EYBL
Academic Interests: Sports Management
Biography: Ash'a Thompson is a versatile win from Desoto, Texas. In 2018-19, Thompson helped lead her high school to a state championship game appearance. Thompson has been a member of the Lady Drive EYBL team. Off the court, Thompson plans to study Sports Management.
McCray on Thompson: "Ash'a plays for one of the top high school's in the country and has played in countless big games. She understands what winning looks like and the grind that goes into sustaining success. Ash'a is a guard that is strong and aggressive. She does a lot of things well. Her versatility, competitive spirit and toughness, will impact our team immediately."
LANAY WHEATON
Position: 5-7 Combo Guard
Hometown: San Antonio, Texas
High School: Holmes High School
AAU Program: SA Finest
Academic Interests: Leadership, Sports Management
Biography: Lanay Wheaton is a dynamic combo guard from San Antonio, Texas. This past season Wheaton averaged 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists per game. Last season she was named Class 6A First Team All-District and to open her senior seas season was named one of Class 6A's Players to Watch. Off the court, Wheaton plans to study Leadership or Sports Management.
McCray on Wheaton: "Lanay is an explosive guard that loves the game of basketball. Her scorers mentality sets her apart. She can break down any defender to create a shot for herself or a teammate. Her aggressive mentality fits our style of play and will add to our guard depth."
