NORFOLK, Va. - In a match that brought 937 fans to the ODU Soccer Complex, the Old Dominion (3-8-1, 1-2-1 C-USA) men's soccer team fell to #20 Kentucky (8-2-3, 2-1-1 C-USA) in double overtime, 2-1 on Saturday night.
In the first half of play, the Wildcats took seven shots, while ODU took just three, with the first half ending scoreless. Both keepers made two saves in the opening 45 minutes of action.
To open the second half, Kentucky's Mason Visconti was served a red card, which gave ODU a one-man up advantage. Not long after, Deniz Dogan served a corner kick to Jimmy Filerman, who then slammed one into the back of the net to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.
The Wildcats tied things up in the 70th minute off a corner kick. Just one minute later, Filerman was handed a red card after his second caution of the night. At that point, both teams were playing with 10 men on the field. The remainder of the second half was an offensive battle with ODU taking nine shots and Kentucky notching 14.
After 90 minutes of action, ODU and Kentucky headed to two, 10 minute golden goal overtime periods. Neither squads took any shots in the opening overtime period. In the 100th minute, freshman Kevin Ramos was served his second yellow card of the night, which gave the Wildcats a man-up advantage after an ODU ejection.
ODU and the Wildcats headed to a second overtime, where in the 107th minute, Kentucky found the back of the net off a corner kick served from Marcel Meinzer, headed in from Eythor Bjorgolfsson.
Overall, Danny Durkin and Jimmy Filerman both took four shots. Djibirl Doubmia made six saves in goal.
