NORFOLK, Va. – Two overtime periods couldn’t decide a winner, so Old Dominion’s (1-1) field hockey match went to shootouts, where the Monarchs came out victorious against American (1-3) by the score of 1-0 . ODU outscored the Eagles, 3-2 in the shootout for its first victory of the season at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Monarchs controlled the game offensively throughout, holding a 14-6 shot advantage, and also had five penalty corner opportunities, three of which came in the two overtime periods. However, ODU was unable to cash in thanks to some diving saves from Eagle goalkeeper Fiona Minter.

ODU had the first opportunity in the shootout period, and sophomore Ilse Westera made the most of it, whizzing the ball past the goalie and into the net. AU then answered with a goal of its own, knotting the shootout at 1-1 early. Both teams were unsuccessful in the next round of shots.

Sophomore Riley Taylor netted her shootout try for ODU, which was followed by a save from Monarch goalkeeper Cam MacGillivray, giving her team a 2-1 advantage.

Each team had a penalty shot opportunity in the next shootout exchange, as senior Rebecca Birch scored for the Monarchs and Gaby de Kock answered for the Eagles.

After Old Dominion missed their final shootout attempt, it was up to MacGillivray to stop the AU attempt and end the game. She came away with the save, giving the Monarchs 3-2 shootout advantage, leading to the win, 1-0 victory.

In regulation, ODU held a 6-3 shot advantage before unloading eight shots combined in the two overtime periods.

Taylor led the game with four shots, two on goal, while senior captain Erin Huffman had three shots of her own. MacGillivray earned the win, collecting two saves, one in each of the overtime periods.

Old Dominion will be back at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex on Tuesday, September 10 to face off against No. 25 William & Mary, a match that was originally scheduled for Friday, but was postponed due to weather. The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
