One of the most consistent pitchers in school history, Tommy West compiled a 31-7 record at Old Dominion. West set a school record by registering a 15-2 record in 1985. That year, the Monarchs were 50-11, captured the Sun Belt Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Regionals.

West's 15 wins that year was not only the best in school history, but ranked fourth nationally. After losing his first game of the year, he then won 15 straight decisions. West's earned run average that year was 2.87 with 11 complete games. He was named Player of the Year in the State of Virginia in 1985, and was second team All Region. That same year, he was named first team All-East Region. West was 6-0 in the Sun Belt Conference and also pitched the Monarchs to victory over Clemson. West twice earned first team All-Sun Belt Conference honors in 1983 and 1985.

In 1983, West was 11-2 with six complete games. That season, the Monarchs rolled to a 41-11 record, reaching the Sun-Belt Conference finals. For his career, West completed 21 of the 40 games he started. West pitched in the Cape Cod Summer Baseball League for Orleans and ranked in the League's top ten in earned run average.

West was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1985. He graduated with a degree in engineering technology.
