A 6-5, center from Hollywood, Fl., Ron Drews set and still holds the schools single gamerebounding record of 33. He set the mark in his first varsity collegiate game against RichmondProfessional Institute on Dec. 3, 1966.
Drews was a three-time, two sport lettermen in both baseball and basketball at Old Dominion from 1966-69. He played for two Old Dominion coaching greats in Hall of Fame members:Bud Metheny in baseball and Sonny Allen in basketball.
As a pitcher on the baseball team, Drews led the team in 1969 with a 1.69 earned run average.He helped lead the 1968 Monarchs to the Mason-Dixon League Championship. He was draftedby the New York Mets in 1969.
Drews is Old Dominion's ninth all-time rebounder with 796. He averaged 9.6 rebounds pergame during his 83-game career. That average is the fifth highest in school history. He grabbed364 rebounds in 1966-67 for a 14.0 per game average and 262 in 1967-68 for a 10.1 per gameaverage. The 14.0 rebound per game average is the third highest in Monarch history.
Drews led the Monarchs in field goal percentage twice, in 1966-67 at .490 and in 1968-69 at.541.
As a senior, he helped lead the Monarchs to their first NCAA College Division basketball tournament and a 21-10 record. He averaged 11.3 points per game as a sophomore, 8.3As a junior and 8.0 as a senior. His 1967-68 squad was one of the nation's highest scoring teamsat 98.2.
Drews was awarded the Tom Scott award in 1969 as the university's top senior athlete. Drewsgraduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He earned a Master of Science degree inAdministration in 1971 and advanced graduate study in management in 1973.
