Joey Caruthers led Old dominion University in assists as a sophomore, junior, and senior. He was a starting guard for the Monarchs' 1975 NCAA Division II National Championship basketball team along with Old DominionHall of Famer Oliver Purnell, while playing for Monarch Hall of Fame coach Sonny Allen.

In four seasons, Caruthers played 118 games, which ranks him fifth on the school's all-time list. He ranks third at Old Dominion with 619 career assists and second in career steals with 188. In 1975, Caruthers earned a spot on the South Atlantic Regional MVP that same year. As a senior, Caruthers helped lead the Monarchs to a 25-4 record in theschool's first NCAA Division I season which included the state's longest winning streak of 22 straight games.

Caruthers scored a career high 22 points in a game against Washington and Lee as a Junior. He also dished out acareer high 11 assists against Baptist College and hauled in nine rebounds in a game against VMI.

Since graduation, the native of Belle, W.VA., currently lives in Virginia Beach where he has taught in the Virginia Beach school system and is a college basketball referee.

Joey has two daughters, Jennifer who graduated from ODU in December of 2010 andJamie who plans to attend VCU in the fall of 2011.

Joey was inducted into the ODU Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
