Jim Zadell earned second team All-American honors in 1963, and was a major part of one of the most dominating baseball teams in school history. While at Old Dominion, he helped lead the squad to an 84-17 record over four years. During that stretch from 1962-1965, the Monarchs won NCAA College Division East Regional titles in 1963 and in 1964, while finishing second in 1965. The 1963-65 teams outscored opponents by 254 runs, hit .300 and failed to score only one game while shutting out their opponents ten times.

Playing the outfield for Hall of Fame coach, and former Yankee Bud Metheny, Zadell was named to the Mason Dixon All-Conference squad in 1963 and in 1965. In 1964, Zadell earned All-District honors. The Monarchs were Mason Dixon Conference champions three straight years from 1963-65.

Zadell hit .423 in 1963 which ranks fourth best in school history. Old Dominion defeated Buffalo, 9-0 for the NCAA Eastern Championship. In 1964, the Monarchs defeated Long Island, 4-3 in Yankee Stadium for their second straight NCAA Eastern Championship, then lost in the 1965 title game to Union College, 3-1.

Zadell served as co-captain with another Monarch Hall of Famer, Freddy Edmonds in 1965, and hit .327 that year. A Norfolk native, Zadell resided living in Roanoke, Va. since 1977.
