GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team remained unbeaten for the 2019 season (5-0-1) after defeating East Carolina (2-3-1) by a 2-1 score at Johnson Stadium on Thursday night.
“I think we had good moments of possession tonight, especially in the first half, where we linked and moved the ball well, but struggled to break them down around the box,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “In the second half after we went ahead I thought we could have pushed and maybe got another, but credit to ECU, they threw numbers forward and forced an equalizer. Again, we dug deep and found a way to win and I felt we were good for it tonight.”
After a scoreless first half, the Monarchs outshot the Pirates 6-1 and took four of the six corners in the opening 45 minutes of action.
Amanda Nhek gave ODU a 1-0 in the 56th minute, giving Nhek her sixth goal in as many games for the Monarchs.
Seven minutes later in the 63rd minute, ECU tied the match on a Tori Riggs goal.
Kyra Ricks converted an Emma Gervase corner in the 78th minute to give Old Dominion a 2-1 lead and ultimately victory on Thursday night in Greenville. The goal was Ricks’ third of the season (ranks second on the team) and Gervase’s second assist on the year.
For the match, ODU outshot East Carolina 14-5 and held a 7-4 advantage for corner kicks.
