NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion (2-0-0) women's soccer team defeated George Mason (0-1-0), 3-1 on Sunday night. Three Monarchs in Loes Van Loon, Amanda Nhek and Ece Turkoglu scored goals for ODU in the Monarchs home opener.
"I was really pleased with the goals we scored," said head coach Angie Hind. "Three fantastic goals and also how we played. When we had to battle we did that well. When we had the time to play, then we managed to get the ball down and make good use of that. I'm very pleased."
The Monarchs opened the game with a Van Loon goal in the 17th minute. Nhek tapped one off to Van Loon who sent a bullet over defenders and past the Mason goalkeeper. ODU closed out the half with a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.
ODU got off to another strong start in the second half, where Nhek headed one into the back of the net off a Kyra Ricks pass in the 57th minute. Nhek picked up three points on the night. Just one minute later Turkoglu scored her first collegiate goal, which soared over Mason defenders and their keeper.
George Mason ultimately outshot the Monarchs, 12-8.
Kasey Perry made her first start in goal this season and tallied three saves.
