NORFOLK, Va. -- It was a long, hot day at the Bud Metheny Complex, but Old Dominion did what it needed to do, splitting a doubleheader to secure the series win against visiting Louisiana Tech on Saturday.
Old Dominion (29-18, 11-13), with a Friday night win in tow, needed just one win on Saturday to take the series over third-place Louisiana Tech (29-19, 13-11) and the Monarchs did just that.
After LA Tech grabbed game one of the twin bill, 4-2, ODU bounced back to win the rubber match, 7-3.
The Monarchs have now won five consecutive series and are 10-4 in the last 14 conference games, after starting league play 1-9.

In game one, the Monarchs were unable to figure out LA Tech southpaw David Leal, who went the distance for his first complete game of the season.
ODU's lone runs came on a Vinnie Pasquantino solo home run in the first and an RBI single in the ninth from Bryce Windham.
Aside from that, the Monarchs were unable to generate any offense against the left-hander, who threw 122 pitches, but walked none.
On the mound for ODU, Nick Pantos threw five solid innings of relief, his first appearance out of the pen this season. Pantos allowed just a pair of runs on two hits.
In game two, ODU erased an early 3-1 deficit behind the bat of Pasquantino and a strong performance from the bullpen.
Pasquantino hit two more home runs and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. For the weekend, Pasquantino hit .500 with three home runs.
Ryan Teschko also had a three-hit performance in game two, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
On the mound, Hunter Gregory, who earned the win, and Trey Fisher, who earned the save, combined to throw 5.1 innings of shutout relief. The win was Gregory's second of the weekend and sixth of the season and the save was Fisher's team-leading sixth.
Overall, ODU pitchers held LA Tech to 0-for-12 with RISP in game two.
Up next, the Monarchs have a bit of a hiatus with no midweek games this coming week, before hosting Marshall May 10-12 for the final home games of the season.
