BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Old Dominion and WKU needed 14 innings to settle game two, but eventually it was the Hilltoppers who prevailed, 8-7, on a walk-off RBI single in the 14th to even the series on Friday night at Nick Denes Field.
Old Dominion (34-19, 15-14) led 7-3 in the fourth inning following an Andy Garriola grand slam, but Western Kentucky (25-26-1, 16-12-1) slowly clawed its way back with two in the fourth and then one in both the eighth and ninth to send the game to extras deadlocked at 7-7.
After four scoreless innings, Kevin Lambert won it for WKU with a 1-out RBI single to left field.
It was ODU's longest game, in terms of innings, since 2014.
Garriola led ODU at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs. With 58 RBIs on the season, Garriola has tied the freshman record for RBIs in a season, set by Tim Hummel in 1998. The freshman also had a big play in the field, cutting down what would have been the game-winning run at the plate in the 10th inning.
Matt Burch also had a three-hit night, going 3-for-7 with two RBIs.
On the mound, Nick Pantos had another terrific outing out of the bullpen. Pantos went 5.1 innings allowed two runs on three hits, while striking out nine. Ryne Moore received the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings.
The series and regular season finale is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. ET. Morgan Maguire (1-4, 7.69 ERA) is expected to toe the rubber for the Monarchs.
ODU will either be the No. 5 or No. 6 seed for the C-USA Tournament.
