BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Behind a brilliant performance from the bullpen and a big night at the plate from Vinnie Pasquantino, Old Dominion defeated No. 28 Florida Atlantic, 7-2, in the series opener on Friday evening in Boca Raton.
Old Dominion (25-16, 8-11) scored three runs in the first inning and led for the remainder of the game.
Florida Atlantic (28-13, 14-5), who entered the weekend tied for first in the Conference USA standings, scored its only two runs in the first inning on an Andru Summerall home run. Following that, ODU pitchers posted eight straight zeroes against the league's top offense.
Aaron Holiday threw 3.1 innings of shutout relief for the win and Hunter Gregory tossed the final three for his second save.

Offensively, eight of ODU's nine starters had a base hit, led by Pasquantino, who went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs.
Three additional Monarchs had multi-hit performances, including Bryce Windham, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, Will Morgan and Tommy Bell, who went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
With 12 hits, ODU has now had 10+ hits in six of the last eight games.
Game two is Saturday at 4 p.m. ET. Nick Pantos (3-2, 4.04 ERA) gets the ball for ODU against the Owls' Mike Ruff (4-2, 5.93 ERA).
