NORFOLK, Va. -- In the opening weekend of Conference USA play, the Old Dominion baseball team dropped a pair of heart-wrenching losses to Charlotte on Saturday at the Bud Metheny Complex.
The day started with a resumed game from Friday, in which Charlotte (10-8, 2-0) scored four runs in the top of the eighth to pull out a come-from-behind 11-8 victory.
In game two, Old Dominion (12-5, 0-2) carried a 6-4 lead into the seventh inning and a one-run advantage into the ninth, but the 49ers rallied to tie in the ninth and then scored a pair of runs in the top of the 13th on two softly-hit singles to secure the series-clinching, marathon victory.
Vinnie Pasquantino (3-6, HR, RBI) and Andy Garriola (2-7, 2B, HR, RBI) led ODU offensively in game two and hit back-to-back solo home runs in the third inning.
On the mound, Morgan Maguire (5IP, 6H, 4R, 3ER, 0BB, 1K) provided ODU with a solid start, while Hunter Gregory (5IP, 2H, 1ER, 2BB, 3K) was strong in relief.
The Monarchs will look to salvage a win in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.
