NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion baseball team defeated Binghamton, 2-1, in the opening game of a three-game set on a soggy Friday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Complex.
Old Dominion (2-2) received a strong start from Nick Pantos (W, 5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), who improved to 2-0 with an 0.87 ERA on the the season.
Four Monarch relievers, including Hunter Gregory (1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K) and Matt Busher (SV, 1.1, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K), then came on to hold Binghamton (0-4) scoreless for the final 5.2 innings. Busher, a true freshman, earned his first career save.
Offensively, Matt Schwarz (0-4, RBI) and Kyle Battle (1-4, RBI) drove in ODU's runs in the first and third innings, respectively, and that proved to be all of the offense the Monarchs would need.
True freshmen Ryan Teschko (2-4, SB) and Andy Garriola (2-4, SB) both recorded their first career hits, while Matt Burch (2-4, 2B, R) continued to swing a hot bat. Burch is hitting a team-best .438 through the first four games.
The series is scheduled to resume on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET. Stay tuned to ODUSports.con and @ODUBaseball on Twitter for any schedule updates, as rain is in the forecast for Saturday.
