PRINCETON, N.J. – The Old Dominion wrestling team wrapped up action at the Princeton Open on Sunday evening. Larry Early and Antonio Agee placed second in their respective weight class. There was no team scoring in the 13-squad event.
Seven other Monarchs placed in the stacked event.
"The Princeton open was great competition as we got the opportunity to compete against multiple Ivy league schools, Purdue and Maryland from the Big Ten and Stanford from the PAC Ten," said head coach Steve Martin. "We normally would not see these athletes until the NCAA tournament. We have several areas that we will work on from a technical, mental and a physical standpoint. We are excited to get the opportunity to wrestle a very good Missouri squad next week at the Ted."
To open the day, Simpson, Perry, Carter, Early, Agee and Hilliard earned wins. Perry won two straight before medically forfeiting his final matches of the day. At 149, Carter won three straight before dropping a close 8-5 decision to Alfred Bannister of Maryland. Carter came back to place third.
Early won four matches by a 33-10 margin to head into the finals at 157 pounds. Early fell to Mike D'Angelo in the finals by a 6-2 decision. Joining Early in the finals was Agee at 184 pounds. The junior won three consecutive matches and only conceded five points during those duals to head into the final. In the championship match, Agee fell to Princeton's Kevin Parker to place second.
At heavyweight, Ali Wahab fell in the opening round but went on to win four straight in wrestlebacks to finish fifth. Hilliard posted three back-to-back wins before medically forfeiting to finish in fourth.
