Monarchs Shutout UAB on the Road, 2-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Old Dominion (9-3-2, 5-1-0 C-USA) men’s soccer team snapped the Blazers (5-7-3, 2-4-1, C-USA) five game unbeaten streak on Sunday with a 2-0 shutout on the road. Kostas Mylonas earned both goals for the Monarchs in their league victory.

In the 35th minute, Mylonas scored off a header from a corner sent from Deniz Dogan. Just two minutes later, Mylonas knocked in his second goal of the game assisted by Max Wilschrey and Niko Klosterhalfen. Wilschrey now owns 25 points, while Klosterhalfen trails right behind him with 19. 

Play was back and forth in the second half but ODU held out the 2-0 lead until the very end.

For the match, ODU outshot the Blazers, 11-8. 

Mertcan Akar collected four saves and his fourth shutout of the 2018 season. Just this week, the junior goalkeeper collected eight saves and two wins. 

ODU is now on a five game unbeaten streak. The Monarchs last loss came on September 29 against Marshall. ODU now sits at the top of the C-USA standings alongside Kentucky and FIU, who also lost one league match this season. ODU has two more games in the regular season in FIU and nationally ranked Kentucky.
