WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The No. 16 Old Dominion field hockey team fell to Georgetown in overtime, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Cooper Field.
Old Dominion (7-3, 1-2 Big East) outshot the Hoyas, 18-6, and held a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners. However, Georgetown (7-3, 1-2 Big East) was able to pull out the win with a goal four minutes into the first overtime period.
"The difference was finishing," said head coach Andrew Griffiths. "They did a good job with their opportunities and we didn't finish our corners or our opportunities very well."
The Hoyas opened the game with a goal less than two minutes into the contest. Georgetown would carry the 1-0 lead into halftime, despite ODU holding an 8-1 advantage in shots in the opening half.
In the second half, ODU finally answered in the 62nd minute, when Rebecca Birch knocked home a penalty corner. Amie Olton picked up the assist.
The Monarchs had a pair of corners in the final minutes of regulation, but could not convert. In overtime, it was Michaela Bruno who netted the game-winner for the Hoyas.
"I thought we played together and we had some good ball possession," said Griffiths. "Their goalie was excellent and we didn't rebound as well as we could have done."
The head coach of Georgetown, Christy Longacre, was an All-American at ODU and graduated in 2013.
