NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion (2-0-1) men’s soccer team topped Santa Clara (1-2-0) by a 3-0 score on Friday night in front of 478 fans at the ODU Soccer Complex. Two goals by Max Wilschrey and one from Tom Wustenberg rounded out the scoring for the Monarchs.
The game remained scoreless through the first 32 minutes of play. In the 32nd minute, Niko Klosterhalfen sent a short pass past the goalkeeper to Wilschrey where he had an open net to notch the first goal of the game.
“We played probably our best 90 minutes of the year, said head coach Alan Dawson. “The first 45 minutes was back and forth. They’re a very good team. We got ourselves a goal and a cushion.”
ODU opened up scoring in the second half by a Wustenberg goal off a free kick sent from Sebastien Hauret. The second goal of the game marked Wustenberg’s first goal of the season.
To round out scoring in the match, in the 85th minute Klosterhalfen sent Wilschrey another pass that was crushed into the goal. With that goal, Wilschrey tallied his fifth goal of the season.
“I thought we were very good at managing the game in the second half. A good, solid, mature performance and we took a step in the right direction."
ODU outshot the Broncos, 19-10. Freshman Daniel Bloyou took six shots as he made his first career start.

The ODU Soccer Classic continues as the Monarchs host Temple on Sunday at 6 p.m. The Owls fell to VCU on Friday night by a 1-0 score. The first 100 fans will receive an ODU Soccer t-shirt. Sunday is also dog day at the ODU Soccer Complex.
