Manilla Named State Coach of the Year; Hutchinson & Starodubtseva Honored

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion women’s tennis head coach, Dominic Manilla, was named the 2018 VaSID Coach of the Year, while Holly Hutchinson and Yulia Starodubtseva were named to the All-State Singles Second Team. 

Dominic Manilla: State Coach of the Year
Manilla was also named the ITA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. He just completed his seventh year as a head coach at Old Dominion. The Monarchs compiled a 19-5 record, highlighted by a season high ITA national ranking of No. 35 and a 5-2 victory at Virginia. ODU went a perfect 5-0 against C-USA opponents during the regular season. Old Dominion also performed well against other major regional contenders including a 6-1 victory over William & Mary (No. 46 in ITA rankings), 4-0 victories over VCU and West Virginia and 7-0 victories over Navy, Richmond and Marshall.

Coach Manilla’s team has also excelled in the classroom with a 3.48 team GPA for the fall semester and a 3.54 GPA for the spring semester. He is the Coaches Chair for Conference USA as well as an ITA Atlantic Regional committee member for the past five seasons.

Holly Hutchinson: All-State Singles Second Team
The reigning C-USA Freshman of the Year played in the No. 1 slot all season for the Monarchs and was named to the Conference USA All-Singles First Team and All-Doubles Second Team. Hutchinson compiled a 14-9 overall record and went 5-2 against C-USA opponents. Hutchinson downed three nationally ranked opponents all in straight sets: No. 92 Zoe Douglas (Iowa), No. 107 Kristina Mathis (Dartmouth) and No. 123 Rosie Cheng (W&M). She led the entire conference for Athlete of the Week awards, garnering three, which was as many as any other team received for the year.

Yulia Starodubtseva: All-State Singles Second Team
Starodubtseva was also named to the All-Conference USA Singles Second Team, as well as the All-Freshman Team. The true freshman put together the best record on the entire team, going 19-2 in No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Starodubtseva took down two nationally ranked players: No. 111 Meghan Kelley (UVA) 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 and No. 123 Rosie Cheng (W&M) 6-2, 6-4. Against Conference USA opponents in singles, she went a perfect 6-0.
