NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team improved to 4-0 for the spring season after taking down James Madison by a 2-0 score at the ODU Soccer Complex. The Monarchs have outscored opponents 10-0 so far this spring.
After an even first half, the score remained 0-0 at halftime.
Just over a minute into the second half, Iris Achterhof earned a foul on the halfway line. Madison Morningstar took the free kick and put it over the defense for Kyra Ricks. JMU’s goalkeeper came for it but Ricks beat her to the bouncing ball and lifted it over the Dukes’ keeper and into the net for the goal to give ODU a 1-0 advantage.
In the 85th minute, Emma Gervase stole the ball from a James Madison midfielder, took a touch and played Blair Vilov a pass between the opposing defense. Vilov’s touch took her behind the back line and her shot was too strong for JMU’s keeper to save. The ball blasted through the keeper’s hands and into the net to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead and ultimately victory.
The zero goals allowed marked the fourth consecutive shutout for Old Dominion, as the Monarchs have yet to concede a goal this spring.
ODU will return to the pitch for its fifth and final spring game on Friday, April 20th at 7:00 p.m. against Virginia Wesleyan at the ODU Soccer Complex. Admission for all is FREE!
