ORLANDO, Fla. -- In its first day of action of the spring season, the Old Dominion women's golf team finished the opening round of the UCF Challenge in 14th place on Sunday at Eagle Creek Golf Club.
ODU, competing without its No. 1 player in Maggie Simmermacher who is out with an injury, was led by senior Katerina Vlasinova. Vlasinova (+2) is tied for 16th and is five shots off the lead.
Sana Tufail (+4, 34th) and Charlotte De Corte (+5, 50th) are also in the top 50 of the 90-player field after one round. Rounding out the Monarch lineup were Abigail Portyrata (+6, 62nd) and Noemie Sudron (+9, 82nd). Portyrata, a transfer, is competing in her first tournament as a Monarch.
26th-ranked Iowa State and 38th-ranked East Carolina (+5) are tied for first. The Pirates' Dorthea Forbrigd (-3) is alone on top of the individual leaderboard. Overall, seven of the 16 teams in the event are ranked in the top 45 in the nation.
Action resumes tomorrow with 18 holes.
