NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion women’s soccer team (7-3-2, 4-1-0) defeated FIU (1-9-0, 0-5-0 C-USA) by a 2-0 score at the ODU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. The shutout was the fourth for the Monarchs this season, as they have lost just one match in their last eight outings.
In the 27th minute, Jackie Stroud ripped a shot off a set piece, which was saved by Nevena Stojakovic, only to have Emily Roberts clean it up to give Old Dominion a 1-0 lead. The goal was Roberts’ second of the season, while the assist was Stroud’s second of the season.
In the 33rd minute, Stroud had a penalty kick saved by Stojakovic, which ultimately kept the score at 1-0 in favor of ODU at the half. In the opening 45 minutes, the Monarchs held advantages for shots 17-5 and corners 6-1. Stojakovic was credited with seven first half saves.
Old Dominion sealed the deal in the 64th minute off an Iris Achterhof goal, which was served by Natalie Johnson. Achterhof’s second goal of the season gave ODU a 2-0 lead and win on Sunday in Norfolk. The assist was Johnson’s second of the year.
The Monarchs outshot the Panthers 31-9 for the 90 minutes and held a 9-1 advantage for corner kicks. Krista Moisio compiled a season-high seven saves in the victory.
Old Dominion will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 13, when the Monarchs travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. for a showdown with Southern Miss.
