NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team hosts Big East foe Temple on Friday at 4 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
Old Dominion (4-7, 1-2 Big East) will look to snap its three-game losing skid, after suffering defeats at Liberty and No. 5 North Carolina last weekend. The Monarchs have been impressive at home this season with a 4-1 record at L.R. Hill. The only loss was a 3-2 defeat to then-No. 7 Penn State in the season opener.
The Monarchs are averaging 2.18 goals per game and are led by the sophomore forward duo of Erin Huffman (7g, 1a) and Alexa Ostoich (5g, 2a), who have combined for half of ODU's goals this season. Seniors Danielle Grega (4g, 3a) and Julia Van Dorsten (2g, 3a) have also been valuable to the ODU attack this season.
Defensively, redshirt freshman Lacey Frazier made her first career start against No. 5 UNC, making six saves and holding the potent Tar Heel attack to just three goals on 20 shots. Junior Kealsie Robles had started the previous 10 games and leads the team with 58 saves.
A slew of true freshmen have also made key contributions for ODU in 2017. Cameran Nery-Strickland (4a) leads the squad in assists, while Mia Fucci (1g, 1a), Anouck Vandersteen (1a) and Alexis Gingerich have all started multiple games.
ODU leads the all-time series against Temple, 20-4-1. However, the Owls won the last meeting, defeating the Monarchs, 2-1, in overtime in Philadelphia last season.
ABOUT TEMPLE
Temple (3-7, 0-3 Big East) enters Friday winless in conference play, dropping matches to Providence, UConn and Georgetown. The Owls average 1.50 goals per game and are being outscored by an average of two goals per game. Senior midfielder Rachael Mueller (5g, 4a) leads the team in scoring.
