AKRON, Ohio -- The Old Dominion men's golf team finished in seventh place at the Firestone Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron, this week at Firestone Country Club.
With the seventh-place finish, the Monarchs (+24) placed in the top half of the 16-team field and finished ahead of a trio of local foes in Richmond (+27), George Mason (+29) and William & Mary (+32). Illinois State (-5) won the event.
Individually, Chad Hess, for the second consecutive tournament to open the fall, posted the best finish of any Monarch. Hess (+3) followed up his 28th-place finish at the VCU Janney Shootout with a 16th-place finish at Firestone.
Freshman Gustav Fransson (+6) also placed in the top 25, tying for 24th. Fransson's 13 birdies were tied for the third-most of any player in the field.
Rounding out the ODU lineup, Calvin Greschner (+7) tied for 31st, Michael Bakker (+11) tied for 48th and Nick Rencis (+12) finished in a tie for 55th.
Cincinnati's Austin Squires (-8) took home individual medalist honors.
Up next, the Monarchs host the ODU/OBX Invitational Oct. 22-24, at Kilmarlic Golf Club in Powells Point, North Carolina.
