Monarchs Battle at the Blue-Silver Intrasquad on Tuesday Night

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion wrestling team kicked off their season on Tuesday night as they held their annual Blue-Silver Intrasquad at the Jim Jarrett Gymnasium.

"I thought that everybody competed hard tonight and the coaches were pleased with the condition and the competitiveness of each wrestler, which is important this early in the year," said head coach Steve Martin.

Starting off the night for the Monarchs at 125, freshman Michael McGee took a major decision win over Steven Simpson, 17-3.

In a match of two sophomores, Will Hilliard took the decision over Ali Wahab in the 285 bout.

2017 NCAA Qualifier, Alex Madrigal defeated three-time Florida State Champion Mason Wohltman in a technical fall, 5:34.

At 149, Jake DiBenedetto and Kenan Carter grappled to a 9-3 Carter win.

Redshirt sophomore Larry Early took an early lead over Shane Jones and ultimately took an 8-2 decision.

2017 NCAA Qualifier Seldon Wright took a major decision over Dean Drugac, a sophomore out of New Jersey who competed unatached the previous season.

The headlining match of the night came from New Jersey native George Walton and Antonio Agee at 184. In a match that went into four tiebreakers, Walton ultimately took the match, 4-3 after scoring an escape point in the fourth overtime.

Redshirt junior John D'Agostino took the 197 match over three-time Virginia State Champion, Noah Bushman, 3-1.

The three-time NCAA qualifier and Penn transfer, Caleb Richardson took the final match of the night at 133 with a decision over freshman Bradley Beaulieu, 5-1.

"We will work on certain positions that need to be corrected because there were situations where they could have scored. Overall, it was the most competitive intrasquad we've ever had since I've been here," explained Martin.
