NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team opens Big East play at No. 1 UConn on Friday at 1 p.m. ODU is 7-15 all-time against No. 1 teams.
Old Dominion (3-3) enters Friday on a two-game winning streak after notching victories over Michigan State and Richmond last week. The Monarchs scored a total of seven goals in the two victories, as ODU is averaging 2.7 goals per game, which ranks in the top 20 nationally.
Erin Huffman leads the Monarchs in scoring with six goals, while Alexa Ostoich ranks second on the team in points with 10 on four goals and two assists. Preseason All-Big East selection Danielle Grega leads the squad with three assists. Defensively, Kealsie Robles has played every minute in goal this season, making 32 saves.
This will mark the 40th all-time meeting between ODU and UConn (5-0). Old Dominion leads the all-time series, 24-15, but the Huskies have won the last four matchups, three of which have come by one goal.
The Monarchs last played a No. 1 team in 2014, when ODU fell to North Carolina. The last ODU win over a No. 1 team came in 2013, when the Monarchs earned a 3-2 upset over Maryland in College Park.
